O Laboratório Imagem em Movimento é o programa de residência criativa do FUSO INSULAR, cujo propósito é dar oportunidade às pessoas que vivem nos Açores – sejam ou não artistas – com interesse nas artes cinematográficas, de realizarem os seus projetos em vídeo, munindo-as de conteúdos e referências e apoiando-as no desenvolvimento e concretização dos seus trabalhos.
Durante três meses, em pleno verão açoriano, os oito participantes do Laboratório 2023 – Anita Nemet, Carolina Rocha, Elliot Sheedy, Fernando Nunes, Gustavo Fernandes, Luís Brum, TAT e Tiago Correia – mantiveram encontros com os artistas Daniel Blaufuks e André Laranjinha para, em conjunto, refletirem sobre a imagem em movimento enquanto expressão artística transversal a todas as práticas. Escreveram guiões, captaram imagens e sons, aventuraram-se por ilhas de edição, em busca de como contar uma história, a sua história. E o resultado são filmes que transitam entre territórios físicos e afetivos, com um olhar poético, mas também crítico, da sociedade em que vivemos.
Qual é o fio condutor entre um sonho, uma ciranda, uma ode à comunidade em forma de poesia visual, a auto procura, a dor de uma guerra, e intensas imagens da beleza no mundo contemporâneo?
A 4ª edição do Laboratório Imagem em Movimento apresenta uma coleção de narrativas, em vídeos que exploram diversas linguagens – a performance, a dança, o cinema experimental, a fotografia, a literatura e as artes digitais -trazendo nas suas criações a diversidade do panorama artístico açoriano.
Os filmes serão apresentados com a presença dos seus criadores, na Black Box do Arquipélago – Centro de Artes Contemporâneas, equipa e espaço fundamentais para a concretização do programa de residência do FUSO INSULAR.

O QUEBRAR DA NOITE – Gustavo Fernandes
Imaginar a noite e o mar. E as janelas que neles habitam. Tentar deslindar a respiração da ilha e o mirar dos vivos que nela caminham. Também as sombras que permanecem na palma da mão e as outras que se adivinham por entre cortinas luminosas. Estará o sonho na mansidão das casas? No profundo do mar? Ou ainda na dobra do peito que resguarda a noite?
PLANO CORONAL – Luís P Brum
O plano coronal é uma descrição anatómica. Divide o corpo, longitudinalmente, em frente e costas. Da cabeça aos pés. Na anatomia serve para descrever o ponto de vista do qual se olham os órgãos. Esta peça apresenta um sonho em que se experiencia uma tensão inimaginável dos pés à cabeça e o impacto desta sobre o gesto de dormir.
QUIETUDE – Tiago Correia
Um convite para uma jornada íntima de alguém em busca de significado e paz interior. Num mundo agitado, encontra refúgio num santuário isolado, onde os seus pensamentos e emoções se entrelaçam numa dança única. À medida que o tempo passa, entrega-se à calma profunda e à introspecção, encontrando consolo na serenidade do seu próprio ser. É um olhar de esperança, autenticidade e redescoberta, onde a dança é a linguagem que o liga às profundezas da sua alma.
SILICON DOLLS – Elliot Sheedy
Silicon Dolls é uma montagem trabalhada a partir de diversas fontes mainstream de imagens.
As novas divindades da nossa realidade são aquelas que não vemos – e que nos recusamos a acreditar que existam. A nossa sociedade zomba dos fanáticos religiosos de nossos ancestrais: os Deuses Egípcios, os Gregos antigos, os míticos adoradores de dragões. O novo panteão de deuses adorados pelas pessoas são as celebridades e os ícones de beleza, que ubiquamente cobrem todos os aspectos do mundo das comunicações – esta é a forma actual de politeísmo humano; contrariamente, a forma contemporânea de monoteísmo praticada por uma quantidade inumerável de pessoas é um gesto de auto glorificação e auto deísmo.
TRAJETO HABITUAL – Carolina Rocha
O vídeo “Trajeto Habitual” constitui uma performance que tem o propósito ser uma metáfora à vida e, consequentemente, à morte. Fala-nos ainda, sobre a imprevisibilidade da nossa existência, “a espantosa realidade das coisas”, como refere Alberto Caeiro, em contraponto com a impermanência, ou a efemeridade das coisas. Ilustra um corpo que gira sobre si próprio, como uma criança que desconhece os seus limites e brinca despreocupada, com esse mesmo movimento. Experimenta a sensação de tontura e da consequente alteração na percepção, mas persiste. É uma forma de perceber a realidade e de se expressar emocionalmente. Inevitavelmente, um corpo que gira sobre si próprio desequilibra-se e, muitas vezes, acaba por cair, mostrando a sua fragilidade e falta de controlo. As quedas ilustram pequenos fins que todos vamos experimentando ao longo da vida, desafiando a nossa capacidade de os viver e afirmar plenamente.

MOVING IMAGE LABORTORY

The Moving Image Laboratory is the FUSO INSULAR Creative Residency Programme, whose purpose is to give people who live in the Azores—whether they are artists or not—and are interested in the cinematographic arts, the opportunity to make their own video projects. The Lab provides content and references and offers support for the development and direction of their work.
For three months, during the Azorean summer, the eight participants of the Laboratório 2023—Anita Nemet, Carolina Rocha, Elliot Sheedy, Fernando Nunes, Gustavo Fernandes, Luís Brum, TAT, and Tiago Correia—met with artists Daniel Blaufuks and André Laranjinha to reflect on moving image as an artistic expression that cuts across all practices. They wrote scripts, captured images and sounds, ventured into editing practice in search of how to tell a story—their story. The result is films that move between physical and emotional territories, offering a poetic yet critical view of the society in which we live.
What is the common thread between a dream, a ciranda, an ode to the community in the form of visual poetry, self-searching, the pain of a war, and intense images of beauty in the contemporary world?
The 4th edition of the Laboratório Imagem em Movimento presents a collection of video narratives that explore various languages: performance, dance, experimental cinema, photography, literature, and digital arts, thereby showcasing the diversity of the Azorean art scene in their creations.
The films will be screened in the presence of their creators at the Black Box of the Arquipélago – Centro de Artes Contemporâneas, a space and a team that play a crucial role in the execution of the FUSO INSULAR residency programme.

Imagine the night and the sea, and the windows that open onto them. Attempt to unravel the island’s whispered breath and the gaze of the living who tread upon it. And the shadows that remain in the palm of the hand, as well as those glimpsed through luminous curtains. Does the dream reside the stillness of the houses, deep within the sea, or within the crease of the chest that guards the night?
PLANO CORONAL – Luís P Brum
The coronal plane, an anatomical term, divides the body into back and front portions, from head to toe. In anatomy, it provides a perspective from which organs are observed. In this piece, we explore a dream where one confronts an indescribable tension that spans from head to toe, and its impact on the act of sleeping.
QUIETUDE – Tiago Correia
Embark on an intimate journey with someone in search of meaning and inner peace. In a bustling world, seek refuge in a secluded sanctuary, where thoughts and emotions intertwine in a unique dance. With the passage of time, he yields to profound tranquility and introspection, seeking solace in the serenity of his own existence. It’s a gaze filled with hope, authenticity, and rediscovery, where dance becomes the language connecting him to the depths of his soul.
SILICON DOLLS – Elliot Sheedy
Silicon Dolls is a work of montage from various “mainstream” sources of imagery.
The new deities of our reality are the ones which we do not see – and refuse to believe they exist. Our society scoffs at the religious fanatics of our ancestors: the Egyptian Gods, the ancient Greeks, the mythical dragon worshipers. The new pantheon of Gods that people worship are the celebrities and the beauty icons, who ubiquitously glaze all aspects of the media world – this is the current form of human polytheism; contrarily, the contemporary form of monotheism practiced by innumerable people is the act of self-glorification and self-deism.
TRAJETO HABITUAL – Carolina Rocha
The video “Trajeto Habitual” is a performance that serves as a metaphor for life and, by extension, for death. It delves into the unpredictability of our existence, highlighting what Alberto Caeiro referred to as “the astonishing reality of things” in contrast to their impermanence and ephemerality. The performance portrays a body in constant motion, reminiscent of a carefree child exploring its boundaries, all within the same fluid movement. It evokes the feeling of dizziness and the resulting shift in perception while enduring as a method for comprehending reality and conveying emotional expression. It conveys the sensation of dizziness and the consequent shift in perception, while enduring as a means of understanding reality and expressing oneself emotionally. Inevitably, a body spinning upon itself becomes unbalanced and often ends up falling, revealing its fragility and lack of control. These falls depict small endings that we all experience throughout life, challenging our ability to fully embrace and assert them.
