“IMAGENS OU SOMBRAS”

Gerard Byrne (Dublin, 1969) apresenta-se pela primeira vez em Portugal com Imagens ou Sombras. Esta exposição é constituída por três grandes instalações e um vídeo, que exploram os códigos da linguagem televisiva, problematizam e desmontam as fronteiras entre performance, televisão, teatro e cinema.
Vinda do Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) em Dublin e terminando na Whitechapel Art Gallery em Londres, a mostra assume uma forma diferente em cada um destes espaços.
Imagens ou Sombras, título da exposição e do catálogo que a acompanha, é mais do que uma evocação da caverna platónica – em que o que nós humanos veríamos seria somente as sombras do mundo verdadeiro –, é sobretudo uma síntese do que interessa a Byrne, a realidade e a ficção, a verdade e a fantasia, não como categorias opostas mas porosas, que se contaminam e instabilizam, tal como uma escultura minimalista exige um uso e manuseamento simultaneamente delicado e complexo.

Gerard Byrne (Dublin, 1969) is presented for the first time in Portugal with Images or Shadows. This exhibition consists of three major installations and a video that explores the codes of televisual language, problematize and dismantle the boundaries between performance, television, theater and cinema.
Starting at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Dublin and ending at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, the show takes a different form in each one of these venues.
Images or Shadows, the title of the exhibition and its catalog, is more than an evocation of the Platonic cave – where we humans would see only shadows of the real world – it is above all a summary of what interests Byrne, reality and fiction, truth and fantasy, not as oppositional categories but as porous ones, categories that contaminate and destabilize themselves, in the same way a minimalist sculpture requires a delicate and complex handling.
