A conferência Mind the Gap: The Artist in Culture Studies, organizada pelo programa de Doutoramento em Estudos de Cultura da Universidade Católica Portuguesa, pretende refletir sobre o artista enquanto sujeito e objeto de produção de conhecimento no campo interdisciplinar dos Estudos de Cultura.
Os artistas partilham com os antropólogos uma preocupação com a política de representação, no sentido da formulação do conhecimento do mundo. Procuraremos entender o significado desse interesse comum. Desde a década de 1990, assiste-se a uma onda desafiadora de eventos de arte que evidencia semelhanças significativas com a antropologia, nas suas teorizações de diferenças culturais e práticas representacionais.
No seu ensaio “O Artista como Etnógrafo?” (1995), Hal Foster evidencia que a desconstrução pós-moderna transformou a arte num campo da antropologia social, introduzindo a “viragem etnográfica na arte contemporânea”.
Existe uma diferença real entre as práticas do etnógrafo e do artista?
Será esta uma posição artificial e eles serão realmente semelhantes?
Esta conferência procura reunir alunos de doutoramento e pós-doutoramento, trabalhando em disciplinas relacionadas com o estudo da cultura (artes, humanidades e ciências sociais), e busca estabelecer um fórum para estimular o debate.

RUTH ROSENGARTEN (Artista e Curadora, Investigadora Associada da Universidade de Joanesburgo)
No âmbito desta conferência será projetado o filme Riddles of the Sphinx (1977) de Laura Mulvey e Peter Wollen, com a presença da realizadora, numa sessão comemorativa do 40º aniversário do ensaio “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema”. A sessão será apresentada por Isabel Capeloa Gil.

The conference Mind the Gap: The Artist in Culture Studies, promoted by the Doctoral program in Culture Studies by the Catholic University of Portugal, aims to discuss about the artist as subject and object of knowledge production in the interdisciplinary field of Culture Studies.
Artists share with anthropologists a concern for the politics of representation, in the sense of the formulation of knowledge of the world. We will seek to understand the meaning of that common interest. Since the 1990s, a challenging wave of art events has occurred that evinces significant similarities with anthropology in its theorizations of cultural difference and representational practices.
In his seminal essay “The Artist as Ethnographer?” (1995), Hal Foster observes that postmodern deconstruction has made art into a field of social anthropology, introducing the “ethnographic turn in contemporary art”.
Is there a real difference between the practices of the ethnographer and the artist?
Is that an artificial position and are they truly similar?
This conference endeavors to bring together doctoral students and post-docs working within disciplines that relate to the study of culture (arts, humanities and social sciences), and seeks to establish a forum for stimulating debate.

In the ambit of this conference it will be screened the film Riddles of the Sphinx (1977) by Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen in a session commemorating the 40th anniversary of the seminal text “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema”. The session will be presented by the Professor Isabel Capeloa Gil.
