Em 2019 Portela teve a oportunidade de visitar os frescos de OROZCO em Cabanas sobre a chegada dos “hispânicos” à América Latina. A ligação aos murais de Almada Negreiros na Gare Marítima de Lisboa foi imediata e incómoda. Como se olhasse num espelho que mostra o avesso da Historia que nos contaram na escola. Deu por si a imaginar-se num corredor onde, de um lado, está a gare de Alcântara, em Lisboa, que acolheu refugiados na WWII, os soldados regressados da guerra colonial após o 25 de abril, e também a casa das pinturas que Salazar encomendou a Almada para “mostrar a grandiosidade das conquistas portuguesas pelo mundo”.
Do outro lado do atlântico, um Orozco documenta a chegada destes “conquistadores”. Com fogo. Com sangue. Com crucifixos, armaduras e hábitos assustadores.
O objectivo desta instalação é fundir estes dois painéis um no outro, como se pudéssemos entrar num espaço e viver em simultâneo, a partida entusiasta dos barcos portugueses e a chegada desastrosa para quem habita o outro lado do atlântico no mesmo corpo.

Patrícia Portela
Autora de espectáculos, instalações e obras literárias. Reconhecida “pela peculiaridade da sua obra”, recebeu vários prémios dos quais destaca: Prémio ACARTE/FCG para Flatland I (2004) e Wasteband (menção honrosa, 2003), finalista do 1’ Prémio Multimédia Sonae/MNACC 2015 para Parasomnia. A sua literatura é aclamada pela crítica e foi finalista do Prémio APE 2013 com Banquete, finalista do Prémio Correntes d’Escritas e Prémio Ciranda 2022 com Hífen que Miguel Real considerou “histórico”.

Coordenou instalações pioneiras em Portugal. Fundador de Irmalucia efeitos especiais em 1999, tem trabalhado com realizadores e artistas plásticos como Pedro Costa, Patrícia Portela, Gabriel Abrantes, João Botelho, João Tabarra, João Onofre, Sérgio Tréfaut, Fernando Vendrell, Carlos Conceição, João Pedro Rodrigues entre outros. Vencedor do prémio Sophia 2020 – Melhores efeitos especiais em Diamantino de Gabriel Abrantes.

In 2019, Portela had the opportunity to visit OROZCO’s frescoes in Cabanas about the arrival of the ‘Hispanics’ in Latin America. The connection to Almada Negreiros’ murals at Lisbon’s Gare Marítima was immediate and uncomfortable. It was like looking in a mirror that shows the other side of the history we were taught at school. He found himself imagining a corridor where, on one side, is the Alcântara station in Lisbon, which welcomed refugees in WWII, soldiers returning from the colonial war after 25 April, and also the home of the paintings that Salazar commissioned Almada to ‘show the grandeur of Portuguese conquests around the world’.
On the other side of the Atlantic, Orozco documents the arrival of these ‘conquerors’. With fire. With blood. With crucifixes, armour and
frightening habits. The aim of this installation is to merge these two panels into one another, as if we could enter a space and experience simultaneously, in the same body, the enthusiastic departure of the Portuguese ships and the disastrous arrival for those who live on the other side of the Atlantic.

Patrícia Portela
Author of shows, installations and literary works. Recognised for “the uniqueness of her work”, she has received several awards, including: the ACARTE/FCG Award for Flatland I (2004) and Wasteband (honourable mention, 2003), and was a finalist for
the 1st Sonae/MNACC Multimedia Award 2015 for Parasomnia. Her literature is acclaimed by critics and was a finalist for the APE Award 2013 with Banquete, finalist for the Correntes d’Escritas Award and Ciranda Award 2022 with Hífen,
which Miguel Real considered ‘historic’.

He coordinated pioneering installations in Portugal. Founder of Irmalucia Special Effects in 1999, he has worked with directors and visual artists such as Pedro Costa, Patrícia Portela, Gabriel Abrantes, João Botelho, João Tabarra, João Onofre, Sérgio Tréfaut, Fernando Vendrell, Carlos Conceição, João Pedro Rodrigues, among others.
