O vídeo está entre a fotografia e a pintura, em termos de materialidade: conserva a fisicalidade dos materiais (textura, pigmentos, etc.), aproximando-se da pintura, mas também da fotografia pelo formato, cor e facilidade de acesso.
Video killed the painting stars é uma abordagem iconoclasta a algumas imagens basilares da história das artes visuais (de Caravaggio, Velasquez, Manet, Helmut Newton a Andy Warhol ou Jeff Wall. Ou porque se destroem obras, ou porque se modificam, ou porque a ação acrescenta novas camadas criando uma nova obra, radicalmente diferente da original.
Este projeto foi produzido pela Galeria Solar/Festival de Curtas-metragens de Vila do Conde e Plataforma Revólver em 2007.

Charles Atlas, Because We Must (1989), 50’, cor, som
Em Because we must, Charles Atlas continua a sua colaboração com o coreógrafo britânico Michael Clark, o enfant terrible do mundo da dança na década de 80. Baseado na peça de teatro original do Sadlers’ Wells Theatre em Londres, é um irónico e irreverente trabalho que tem tanto de entretenimento como de provocação. A estilização extravagante e o humor burlesco que prevalece da coreografia, guarda-roupa e encenação, são espelhados pelo enfoque de Charles Atlas na teatralidade da performance e no artifício de uma narrativa fora de cena. Michael Clark resistente às convenções da dança “séria”, compõe escandalosos, inesperados e inventivos ambientes que incluem uma intérprete nua manuseando uma serra elétrica e um interlúdio psicadélico, dando origem a uma atuação, tão magistral de ironicamente interpretada.

Video stands between photography and painting in terms of materiality: preserves the materials’ physical properties (texture, pigments…), coming close to painting but also to photography through its format, colour and access facility. “Video killed the painting stars” is an iconoclastic approach to some of the most important pictures on the history of images, in 11 videos. Because images are destroyed and transformed, or because the action adds new layers creating a new work, radically different from the original.
This project was produced by Galeria Solar/Short Film Festival of Vila do Conde, Portugal and Plataforma Revolver in Lisbon. Nuno Rodrigues (the Festival Director) was the curator.

Charles Atlas, Because We Must (1989), 50’, color, sound
In Because We Must, Atlas continued his collaboration with the British choreographer Michael Clark, the enfant terrible of the dance world in the 1980s. Based on an original stage production at Sadlers’ Wells Theatre in London, this is an ironic, irreverent work that is as entertaining as it is provocative. The extravagant stylization and burlesque humor that pervade the choreography, costuming and staging are mirrored by Atlas’ focus on the theatricality of the performance and the artifice of the behind-the-scenes narrative. Clark thumbs his nose at the conventions of “serious” dance, composing outrageously unexpected and inventive scenarios that include a nude dancer wielding a chain-saw and a psychedelic interlude, all exquisitely if ironically performed.
