O filme parte de English As She Is Spoke – O Novo Guia da Conversação em Portuguez e Inglez, em Duas Partes (corretamente dir-se-ia “English as it is spoken”), título de um guia de conversação português-inglês publicado em 1855 por Pedro Carolino e José da Fonseca, que devido aos seus erros é considerado um dos grandes clássicos do humor não-intencional, uma vez que nenhum dos autores sabia falar inglês. Esse humor, resulta das expressões idiomáticas que são traduzidas literalmente.
John nasceu nos Açores. Com 9 anos de idade emigrou com os pais para Newark (EUA) de onde nunca mais voltaram. John cresceu com a cultura americana tendo como única referência à cultura da sua terra natal algumas canções que a mãe, uma fadista frustrada, costumava cantar. John não sabe falar português porque o pai, a partir do momento que emigrou para os EUA, sempre proibiu a família de falar português em casa como forma de se sentir mais americano. No entanto este fulgor patriótico leva a que se crie entre eles uma língua estranha, uma vez que vivem demasiado fechados na comunidade portuguesa e os pais nunca tiveram aulas de inglês.
Desde cedo que John se sente desenraizado. Não é português porque é impedido de desenvolver quaisquer contactos com a cultura de origem da família, mas também não se sente totalmente americano. Expulso da família, expulso do país e expulso da comunidade açoriana, John faz um esforço para aprender a língua portuguesa como forma de tentar a integração, mas logo percebe que a sua orientação sexual será sempre um fator de exclusão dentro da comunidade dos excluídos.
No fim, fechado sobre si próprio, John canta o seu destino e a sua condição.

English As She Is Spoke, in which the film is based, is the common name of a 19th century book credited to José da Fonseca and Pedro Carolino, which was intended as a Portuguese-English conversational guide or phrase book but is regarded as a classic source of unintentional humor, as none of the authors didn’t know how to speak proper English. The humor appears to be a result of dictionary-aided literal translation, which causes many idiomatic expressions to be translated wildly inappropriately.
John was born in Azores. With 9 years old he emigrated with his parents to Newark (USA), never coming back. John grew up in the American culture and the only reference to his homeland culture were some songs that her mother, a frustrated fado singer, used to sing. John doesn’t speak Portuguese because ohis father, since he emigrated to the USA, never allowed the family to speak Portuguese at home, hoping to feel more American. However, this patriotic glow created among them a new language, since they live too closed in the Portuguese community and his parents never had English lessons.
John always felt without roots. He’s not Portuguese once his family always avoided any contacts with his homeland culture, but he also never felt totally American. Now, banished from his family, deportee and expelled from the Azorean community, John makes an effort to learn Portuguese as a way to fit in, but soon realizes that his sexual orientation will always be a factor of exclusion within the community of the excluded.
At the end, closed over himself, John sings his fate and his condition.
