Alma e Elisabeth desenvolvem uma estranha relação. Inicialmente, Alma tenta preencher o vazio provocado pelo silêncio de Elisabeth. A primeira fala incessantemente sobre a sua vida à paciente aparentemente atenta. Mas depressa se torna óbvio que o interesse de Elizabeth é mais do que mera educação ou curiosidade voyeurista. Ela está, de facto, a querer absorver a identidade de Alma perante o vazio que deixou no abandono da fachada que ela criou como Elisabeth Vogler. Elisabeth luta por essa transferência absoluta, a simbólica batalha pela alma, como forma de afastar dela a dor da sua própria existência. Persona é uma provocação altamente cerebral e artisticamente complexa à identidade humana.

Alma and Elisabeth develop a strange relation. First, Alma tries to fill the emptiness provoked by Elisabeth’s silence. Alma speaks incessantly about her life to the apparently watchful patient. But soon it becomes obvious that Elizabeth’s interest is more than mere education or voyeuristic curiosity. She is trying to absorb Alma’s identity to fill the emptiness caused by the facade that she created as Elisabeth Vogler. Elisabeth fights for this absolute transference – the symbolic battle for the soul – as an exit from the pain of her own existence. Persona is a highly cerebral and artistically complex provocation to the human identity.
