A Ultra Maratona Atlântica é uma prova de atletismo percorrida pela areia da praia, entre Melides e Tróia, num território de rara beleza natural, com um dos litorais menos intervencionados da Europa. Ao longo do Oceano Atlântico, a perder de vista, os atletas desafiam os seus próprios limites, aliando resistência física e psicológica, espírito de sacrifício e prazer de correr, para realizarem os 43 km que medem quantitativamente a distância que une aqueles dois pontos. Correr para escapar, já para o nómada das origens, uma forma de resistir.
Na primeira vez que ouvimos falar da UMA, um velho homem local confessou-nos que em 1987 se tinha inscrito na primeira edição da prova para “ver” em continuidade o território onde tinha nascido e onde sempre tinha trabalhado: nos arrozais, na pesca, no cultivo dos campos, nos pinhais e mais tarde na praia, quando montou o seu próprio negócio de bar de apoio aos veraneantes. Saltava de um trabalho para outro, de sítio para sítio, mas tinha a ideia que não dominava a terra onde vivia.
Esta instalação, em tríptico, um dos resultados do projeto artístico UMA, para além do filme/documentário a estrear em 2012, aborda o conceito de trajetividade tão caro a Paul Virilio: entre a perceção subjetiva do território e a objetividade da distância que o define, as coreografias do “ser em trajeto” – dos atletas, por nós, e nossas ao acompanhá-los, por terra, por mar e pelo ar – como forma de conferir essa grandeza da natureza, “estabelecendo o vínculo que liga o espaço e o esforço, a duração e a extensão de uma fadiga física.”
Através da livre associação entre som e imagem e da disposição dos espectadores, sentados, formando um outro horizonte ao longo do horizonte da banda de imagem, pretende-se criar um dispositivo “territorial” capaz de evocar em cada um, e em público, esse “horizonte profundo da nossa memória dos lugares e, por conseguinte da nossa orientação no mundo”; esse tempo psicológico do ser trajetivo, entre o subjetivo e o objetivo; essa outra dimensão de ser “em movimento daqui para ali, de um para outro lugar”. UMA corrida com um tempo próprio. UMA interpretação de um território. UMA ecologia do conhecimento de estar no mundo.

“UMA”

The Atlantic Ultra Marathon is an athletics test which takes place by the shore, between Melides and Tróia, in a territory of rare natural beauty, with one of the least intervened coastlines in Europe. Throughout the Atlantic Ocean, the athletes challenge their own limits, combining physical and psychological endurance, spirit of sacrifice and pleasure of running, to complete the 43km that measure quantitatively the distance between those two points. Run to escape, already a way to resist to the nomad of origins.
The first time we heard about UMA (Atlantic Ultra Marathon), an old local man confessed to us that in 1987 he had enrolled in the first edition of the competition to “see” in continuity the territory where he had been born and where he had always worked: in the rice fields, in the fishing, in the cultivation of the fields, in the pinewoods and later on the beach, when he set up his own bar to support vacationers. He jumped from one job to another, from place to place, but he had the idea that he did not dominate the land where he lived.
This installation, in a triptych, one of the results of the artistic project UMA, in addition to the film/documentary to be released in 2012, approaches the concept of trajectory so dear to Paul Virilio: between the subjective perception of the territory and the objectivity of the distance that defines it, the choreographies of “the being in transit” – of the athletes, for us, and ours to accompany them, by land, sea and air – as a way of conferring this greatness of nature, “establishing the link that connects space and effort, duration and extent of physical fatigue.”
Through the free association between sound and image and the disposition of the seated spectators, forming another horizon along the horizon of the image’s edges, we intend to create a “territorial” device capable of evoking in each one, and in public, this “deep horizon of our memory of the places and therefore of our orientation in the world”; this psychological time of the being in transit, between the subjective and the objective; this other dimension of the being ”moving from here to there, from one place to another.” A race with its own time. An interpretation of a territory. A knowledge’s ecology of being in the world.
