“ICH SAH: DAS LAMM AUF DEM BERG ZION OFFB.14.1”

VA Wölfl

English

“And I saw the Lamb on Mount Zion” is the verse that gives the title to VA Wölfl’s work. It is no surprise that one of the most visionary and fearless choreographers of the German dance is interested in the hallucinatory poetry of the Apocalypse.

His creations are characterized by a radical and disturbing imaginary, somewhere between surrealism and hyper-realism.

His choreographies are more focus on the perception of movement than on the movement itself, and the images he creates continue to haunt us after the end of the show. “It’s no coincidence,” writes the dance critic Arnd Wesemann, “that the hollow sound – a demonic click – of 17 dancers unlocking their Walther PPK guns and firing on their own knees sounds like a camera shutter. It is an image which develops itself by the thousandths of a second in the head of each viewer, dividing himself between the immediate sensation of fear and the consciousness of staging and falsification.” With uncompromising precision, the choreographer deconstructs the banality of daily life, exposing the emptiness and stigmatization of a society obsessed with security and trapped in its own fears.
