“ERASURE”

Apagar, ausentar, desaparecer. É em torno do conceito de apagamento que se constrói Erasure. Pedro Manuel cria um dispositivo onde fotografa uma série de imagens que compõe no momento, para, de seguida, projetá-las numa tela, e voltar a fotografá-las. No entanto, ao captar as imagens uma segunda vez, a intensidade do flash sobrepõe-se à luz da projeção. As imagens desaparecem com o clarão. Paradoxalmente, o ato de registo torna-se um ato de apagamento.
A perceção da imagem é deslocada da superfície dos olhos para a memória. Cada imagem da tela em branco corresponde a uma imagem apagada e, ao passar por cada uma dessas fotografias, passa-se também em revista a sequência das imagens que estavam a ser projetadas. Em retrospetiva, a imagem continua lá, como um fantasma ou um souvenir. A ausência material da imagem inscreve-se na memória do público como uma presença, um rasto fotográfico.
Com Erasure, Pedro Manuel encontra um modo de formular a sua relação entre teoria e prática através da expressão play-essay, um tipo de espetáculo que ensaia conceitos através do jogo e do teatro.

Erase, leave, disappear. It is around the concept of erasure that this eponymous work is built. Pedro Manuel creates a device in which he photographs a series of images that he composes in loco, and then projects them on a screen and re-photographs them. However, by capturing the images a second time, the flash intensity overrides the projection light. The images disappear in a flash. Paradoxically, the act of recording becomes an act of erasure.
The image’s perception is displaced from the surface of the eye to the memory. Each of the blank screen images corresponds to an erased image, going through each of these images also means reviewing the sequence of images that are being projected. In retrospect, the image is still there, like a ghost or a souvenir. The material absence of the image becomes part of the audience’s memory as a presence, a photographic trace.
With Erasure, Pedro Manuel finds a way of joining theory and practice through the ‘play-essay’, a kind of show that exposes concepts through theater play.
