Nunca as minhas mãos ficam vazias segue o percurso do artista Faustin Linyekula em Lisboa. No âmbito da bienal Artista na Cidade (edição 2016), Faustin é convidado a criar e intervir na cidade em colaboração com diversas entidades culturais. O bailarino, coreógrafo e encenador congolês tem uma obra assumidamente política, onde denuncia décadas de corrupção, opressão, violência, sofridas pelo povo do seu Congo, ex-Zaire, ex-Congo Belga, ex-Estado Independente do Congo. E apesar de todas essas ruínas (nome que o próprio utiliza para comunicar esse declínio), no trabalho de Faustin há um enorme e esperançoso espaço para enaltecer a força das raízes culturais do seu povo, o ânimo de muitos que continuam a tentar sobreviver, lutar, e sonhar por um país e mundo melhores. Este documentário vive desta dualidade na obra de Faustin Linyekula: apesar de denunciar a escuridão, ele parece procurar a luz; apesar de expor a devastação de milhões que vivem na pobreza, sem condições mínimas de saúde e educação, ele reflete, espera e trabalha para a mudança. Ele próprio pede, em vez do slogan do punk “No Future”, um “More more more Future”. Apesar da dificuldade de se viver entre estes dois mundos (dificuldade essa que o próprio Faustin assume: “uma pessoa tem de ser muito doida para acreditar teimosamente – apesar das convulsões da história, das guerras, das revoluções, dos regimes – na celebração da beleza”), é talvez na (e pela) energia criada nos seus espetáculos que se acredita na coerência dessa dualidade, e como ela nos poderá ajudar a entender melhor (e a trabalhar sobre) o mundo que nos rodeia.

Nunca as minhas mãos ficam vazias follows the journey of the artist Faustin Linyekula in Lisbon. As part of the biennial Artista na Cidade (2016th edition), Faustin is invited to create and intervene in the city in collaboration with multiple cultural entities. The Congolese dancer, choreographer and director has a politically committed work in which he denounces decades of corruption, oppression and violence suffered by the people of his Congo, former Zaire, formerly Belgian Congo, formerly Independent State of Congo. And besides all these ruins (the word he uses to express this decline), in Faustin’s work there is an enormous and hopeful space to exalt the strength of the cultural roots of his people, the bravery of many who keep trying to survive and fight, and who keep dreaming with a better country and world to live on. This documentary lives on this duality in the work of Faustin Linyekula: despite denouncing the darkness, he seems to search for the light; despite exposing the devastation of millions living in poverty, without the minimum level of health care and education, he reflects, works and hopes for a change. He himself asks for a “More more more Future”, instead of dueling in the punk slogan “No Future”. Despite the difficulty of living between these two worlds (a difficulty that Faustin himself assumes: “a person must be too crazy to believe stubbornly – despite the convulsions of history, wars, revolutions, regimes – in the celebration of beauty”), it is perhaps by the energy created in his shows that one believes in the coherence of this duality, and how it can help us to better understand (and work about) the world around us.
