O filme Laje Branca é um take único de duas câmaras cobrindo 180º de direções cardiais opostas de uma ilha.
A ilha é uma laje branca, rochosa e nua, rodeada de uma paisagem montanhosa distante. Um homem caminha o limite do seu perímetro exterior. O movimento de progressão e a cadência da ondulação marítima são os dois únicos elementos móveis num cenário profundamente estático.
O seu percurso vem a delinear-se elíptico e a revelar volumetria na formação rochosa, o que sugere uma suspensão.
A pesquisa do autor, sobretudo em pintura e vídeo-instalação, tem sido dedicada às possibilidades e extensões da paisagem. Leva a cabo uma prática empenhada numa abordagem fenomenológica – a paisagem enquanto paisagem vivida. Para isso, inclui no seu processo de trabalho expedição e a caminhada. Procura um encontro autónomo entre o corpo presente e o lugar.
Interessa, neste filme, a interceção entre formular uma paisagem e a consciência de a estar a formular. Projetar para exterior a paisagem conforme filtrada pelos seus olhos protésicos, mas manter-se, ou regressar, ao que é visto como quem ainda não tem a capacidade de ter consciência que vê.

É licenciado em Pintura pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa (2006). Vive e trabalha em Lisboa e em São Paulo.
Pedro Vaz é atualmente artista residente na Pivô Pesquisa, São Paulo, onde desenvolve o projeto Caminho do Ouro, que inclui uma expedição ao histórico Caminho do Ouro.
Em Setembro passado participou na residência LABVERDE 2016 Imersão Artística na Amazónia, em Manaus, Brasil, organizada pelo Instituto Nacional de Pesquisa da Amazónia e pela Manifesta Arte e Cultura.
Os projetos a decorrer com a sua participação incluem, entre outros, Pentimento, Anozero Bienal de Arte Contemporânea de Coimbra e Terra Firme, exposição individual na Baró Jardins, São Paulo.
Anteriormente foi apoiado pela Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian no projeto Tour du Mont-Blanc (em conjunto com a DuplaCena) apresentado, no contexto do Festival Temps d’Images, no Museu de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado, (Lisboa, 2014), bem no projeto Monólito (2013).
O seu trabalho artístico centra-se numa pesquisa em torno da paisagem, maioritariamente em suporte de pintura e instalação vídeo. Interessa-se por levar a cabo uma reflexão acerca do exercício de poder inscrito no cruzamento entre a capacidade de representar do artista e a condição representável da natureza, implicando o que se entende por espaço, lugar e paisagem. O contacto pessoal com o lugar é essencial na sua prática e os seus projetos incluem muito frequentemente uma expedição.

The film Laje Branca is a unique take of two cameras covering 180º of opposite cardinal directions of an island.
The island is a white, rocky and bare slab, surrounded by a distant mountainous landscape. A man walks the boundary of his outer perimeter. The movement of progression and the cadence of maritime waves are the only two moving elements in a deeply static scenario.
Its course comes to delineate itself elliptically and to reveal volumetry in the rock formation, which suggests a suspension.
The author’s research, especially in painting and video installation, has been devoted to the possibilities and extensions of the landscape. It carries out a practice committed to a phenomenological approach – the landscape as a lived landscape. For this, it includes in its work process the expedition and the pathway. It seeks an autonomous encounter between the present body and the place.
What interests in this film is the interception between formulating a landscape and the consciousness of formulating it. To project to the outside the landscape as filtered through its prosthetic eyes, but to maintain itself, or return, to what is seen as one who does not yet have the capacity to be aware of what he actually sees.

Has a degree in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (2006). He lives and works between Lisbon and São Paulo.

Previously he was supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in the Tour du Mont-Blanc project (with DuplaCena) presented, in the context of the Temps d’Images Festival, in the Chiado Museum of Contemporary Art, (Lisbon, 2014), as well as the Monólito project (2013).
His artistic work focuses on the research around the landscape, mostly in painting and video installation supports. His interest lies on leading a reflection about the exercise of power inscribed in the cross between the artist’s capacity to represent and the representable condition of nature, implying what is meant by space, place and landscape. The personal contact with the place is essential in his practice and his projects often include an expedition.
