Apichatpong Weerasethakul, uma das figuras mais inovadoras e hipnotizantes do cinema de hoje, tem a sua primeira incursão no mundo do teatro com uma “projeção-performance”, baseada no seu mais recente filme Cemitério do Esplendor. Jenjira, a atriz-fetiche do cineasta, apresenta-se no papel de Jen, uma dona de casa que precisa de uma operação. No hospital, os seus sonhos entrelaçam-se com os de Itt, um soldado num estado de sono profundo, um habitante de um país privado de luz. Num outro lugar, um grupo de jovens aventura-se no rio Mekong. Outros exploram uma caverna em busca de um possível habitat para um futuro incerto… No decorrer de sonhos prolongados e reflexões, cada um deles remenda as suas feridas e refugia-se no sono, ou no lugar de uma resistência secreta. Fever Room desenrola-se num mundo crepuscular, num espaço nos limites da realidade e do sonho, da obscuridade e da luz. No palco, as imagens filmadas misturam-se com a encenação, mergulhando os espectadores numa experiência mental e sensorial, desorientadora e hipnótica. A partir das ressonâncias políticas do seu último filme, a peça também transmite o esboço de um país à beira do colapso, na busca de um futuro. Essa performance intensa leva-nos muito além das fronteiras do cinema, mergulhando-nos profundamente no universo sensual e sonhador do cineasta. Um mundo em que forças invisíveis erguem as suas cabeças no meio de uma realidade na sua forma mais prosaica. Na caverna do teatro, a magia penetra, a febre aumenta e as sombras ganham vida novamente.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul, one of the most innovative, mesmerizing figures in cinema today, makes his first incursion into the world of theatre with a “performance-projection”, based on his latest film Cemetery of Splendour. Jenjira, the filmmaker’s fetish actress, plays the role of Jen, a housewife who is due to have an operation. In hospital, her dreams intermingle with those of Itt, a soldier in a state of slumber, an inhabitant of a country deprived of light. Elsewhere, a group of youngsters ventures out onto the Mekong river. Others explore a cave in search of a possible habitat for an uncertain future… In the course of extended dreams and musings, each of them patches up their wounds, and takes refuge in sleep, or the place of a secret resistance. Fever Room unfurls in a twilight world, in a space on the confines of reality and dream, obscurity and light. On the stage, filmed images blend into the staging, plunging spectators into a disorientating, hypnotic mental and sensorial experience. Picking up on the political resonances of his last film, the piece also gives us the outline of a country on the brink of collapse, in search of a future. This intense performance takes us far beyond the frontiers of cinema, and plunges us deep into the filmmaker’s dream-like, sensual universe. A world in which invisible forces rear their heads amidst a reality of the most prosaic kind. In the theatre’s cavern, magic takes effect, fever rises, and shadows come to life once again.
