“MEDO A CAMINHO”

A minha geração entrou na idade adulta com a confiança e o otimismo de uma série de acontecimentos que tiveram tanto de simbólico como de político, social e económico: a abertura à Europa, a entrada na CEE, o derrubar do muro que separava Berlim em dois, o fim da cortina de ferro.
Entretanto, no meio de percalços e conflitos vários, vivemos num mundo onde, dizem-nos as estatísticas, nunca houve uma relação tão dinâmica entre povos e territórios, nunca houve tantas pessoas a viverem acima do limiar de pobreza, nunca fomos tão saudáveis, com tanta esperança de vida, a viver em segurança, e com tão poucos conflitos.
Mas os factos parecem esbarrar contra outro muro: progressivamente, como um vírus que se alastra, as pessoas não se sentem mais seguras. Temem pelo futuro, temem pela guerra, temem pela sua vida, pela sua segurança, pelo seu trabalho, pelos seus padrões de vida, pelo ambiente. Temem pela própria saúde mental: é o medo a devorá-las sem pressa. Têm medo e querem erguer novos muros que as protejam do que temem. Têm medo e querem apagar, ou mesmo destruir, tudo o que nelas mantém esse medo bem desperto.
Estranho paradoxo em que as estatísticas nos dizem que nunca estivemos tão bem, e as pessoas sentem que nunca estiveram (ou caminham para) tão mal.
Há uma forma de explicar isto: nunca fomos bombardeados, e de forma tão rápida, com tanta informação. Sabemos mais hoje sobre o que se passa do outro lado do mundo do que há duas ou três gerações sabíamos sobre o que se passava numa cidade vizinha. Onde em outros tempos temíamos o desconhecido, hoje tememos pelo tanto que conhecemos.
Com “Medo a caminho” o que me interessa é outra possibilidade: será que o nosso medo é também uma forma de avançar, cheios de medo? Ou será antes que, do que mais temos medo é de nós próprios? E que a loucura coletiva (enquanto sinónimo de medo à solta) é a última fronteira em que combatemos no outro um inimigo que é o reflexo do nosso medo?
E será que podemos aprender a sorrir e a conviver com medos reais, tal como aprendemos a rir dos medos que se revelaram infundados?

“MEDO A CAMINHO”

My generation began their adulthood with the confidence and optimism from a series of events that had both symbolic but also political, social and economic expression: the opening to Europe, entering the EEC, overthrowing the wall that separated Berlin in two, the end of the iron curtain.
However, in the middle of mishaps and various conflicts, we live in a world where, according to statistics, there has never been such a dynamic relationship between races and territories, there have never been so many people living above the poverty line, we have never been so healthy, with so much life span, living in a safe environment, and with so few conflicts.
But these facts seem to bump into another wall: progressively, like a spreading virus, people do not feel safer. They fear for the future, they fear for war, they fear for their life, for their safety, for their work, for their living standards, for the environment. They fear for their own mental health: it is the fear devouring them with no rush at all. They are afraid and want to erect new walls to protect them from what they fear. They are afraid and want to erase, or even to destroy, everything that keeps them in this increasing sense of fear.
A strange paradox in which statistics tell us that we’ve never been so well, and people feel they’ve never been so bad.
There’s a way to explain this: we’ve never been bombed, and so quickly, with so much information. We know more today about what is happening on the other side of the world than we knew two or three generations ago about what was happening in a neighboring town. Where once we feared the unknown, today we fear for what we know.
With “Medo a caminho” what interests me is another possibility: is our fear also a way of moving forward, full of fear? Or we fear ourselves the most? And that collective madness (as synonymous with fear on the loose) is the last frontier in which we fight the other like an enemy that is the reflection of our fear?
